Definitely Dylan Live - 17 March 2019

March 17, 2019 in Definitely Dylan Live

An adventurous week for Definitely Dylan Live! Public transport delays stole away a few minutes from the usual full hour, and Laura and Robert are both a bit under the weather, but they say music has healing powers, so we’re turning our attention to Dylan’s live performances vs. studio versions. We discuss Dylan’s need to switch it up in his concerts, why some songs are bound to sound different live, and why the idea of an “original version” is strange concept anyway.

If you want to hear the previous episode on Dylan’s live performances, check out Episode #7.

You can find the episodes on More Blood, More Tracks, Mondo Scripto, the Never Ending Tour, and many more in the archive.

Also, you can watch the video to the Hard Rain TV Special version Idiot Wind here. These are bootleg videos, so they get taken down regularly (I’m just hoping that they get an official release one of those days!)

By the way, I’mannoyed that I failed to mentioned that this year’s winner of Crufts 2019 Best in Show has been awarded to a Papillon dog called Multi Champion Planet Waves Forever Young Daydream Believers – otherwise known as Dylan. - it would have perfectly been on topic!

As always, you can find the show on Twitter and Instagram, as well as on Facebook.

Playlist:

  1. I Threw It All Away (snippet from Nashville Skyline)

  2. I Threw It All Away (live, 16 May, 1976, Fort Worth, TX, fromHard Rain)

  3. Forever Young (snippet, slow version Planet Waves)

  4. Forever Young (live, 27 June, 1981, Earl’s Court, London, from Trouble No More)

  5. Idiot Wind (snippet, New York Sessions)

  6. Idiot Wind (snippet, Blood On The Tracks)

  7. Idiot Wind (live, 23 May, 1976, Fort Collins, CO, from Hard Rain)

  8. It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue (snippet, Bringing It All Back Home)

  9. It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue (live, 4 December, 1975, Montreal Forum, from The Bootleg Series 5)

Definitely Dylan Live - 3 March 2019

March 03, 2019 in Definitely Dylan Live

This week on Definitely Dylan Live, Laura is joined in the studio by Swedish singer songwriter Benjamin Folke Thomas, who came bearing song requests from throughout Bob Dylan’s career. Together they discuss the Basement Tapes, Dylan’s 80s production, and the best website to learn to play Dylan songs on the guitar (http://dylanchords.info of course)!

If you’re interested in hearing Dylan’s cover of Warren Zevon’s Accidentally Like a Martyr, you can listen to it here. Also, here’s a beautiful alternative live version of Dylan singing Zevon’s Mutineer live in concert.

If you’d like to find out more about the song Caribbean Wind, you can listen to Episode #29.

What are your unpopular Dylan opinions?

Playlist:

  1. Shelter From The Storm - Hard Rain

  2. Million Dollar Bash

  3. Mutineer (live, Warren Zevon cover)

  4. Tight Connection To My Heart

  5. Caribbean Wind (Biograph version)

  6. The Times We’ve Known (live, Charles Aznavour cover)

Definitely Dylan Live - 24 February 2019

February 24, 2019 in Definitely Dylan Live

This week on Definitely Dylan Live, we’re exploring Dylan through the years, with one song from each decade of Dylan’s career! Robert Chaney is back as Laura’s sidekick, and we have a surprise visit from our hero Simon Stanley Ward, who will be back on the programme sooner than you think!

A big correction and some additional info: there was a confusion of 90s sitcoms. Dylan had a cameo on Dharma & Greg (not on Will & Grace - why were there two shows with such similar titles?)! The story behind it was that Eddie Gorodetsky, a friend of Dylan’s, was a writer and director for Dharma and Greg and invited him to come on the show. Gorodetsky was also the producer, writer and co-creator of "Theme Time Radio Hour”! T-Bone Burnett was playing with him, but otherwise not working on the show. Guys! It’s incredible the things you can get confused when you’re live on air! Anyway, here’s a clip of Dylan’s hilarious guest appearance on the show.

Anyway, here’s the link to that incredible alternative vocal of Going Going Gone.

Playlist:

  1. Roll On John (from Tempest, snippet)

  2. Roll On John (1962)

  3. Going Going Gone (from Planet Waves)

  4. Death Is Not The End (from Down In the Groove)

  5. Delia (live at the Supper Club, NYC, 17 November 1993)

  6. I Can’t Get You Off Of My Mind (Hank Williams cover)

  7. Stay With Me (from Shadows In The Night)
